First things first: it’s usually your home network

When a streaming puck won’t join Wi-Fi, the instinct is to assume the device has failed. In practice, that is rarely the cause. A puck failing to connect to Wi-Fi is almost always a local network issue: your router, your Wi-Fi signal, the password, or which network the puck is trying to join. The puck is only as reliable as the connection it sits on.

  • If other devices cannot reach the internet either, the problem is your broadband or router, not the puck. Contact your internet provider or check for a local outage.
  • If other devices can reach the internet, your broadband is fine and the issue is between the puck and the router. Move on to Step 2.

It sounds obvious, but a surprising number of “puck won’t connect” problems turn out to be a broadband dropout that has nothing to do with the streaming setup at all.

Step 2: Restart the router and the puck

The classic fix exists because it genuinely works. A restart clears temporary glitches, refreshes the connection, and re-establishes a clean link between the two devices.

  1. Switch off the puck at the plug and unplug your router.
  2. Wait around 30 seconds. This lets both devices fully power down.
  3. Power the router back on first and give it a couple of minutes to come fully online — wait until its status lights settle.
  4. Only then power the puck back on and let it start up.

Restarting the router first matters. The puck needs a working network to join, so bringing the router up before the puck avoids the puck searching for a connection that isn’t ready yet.

Step 3: Move the puck closer and reduce interference

Wi-Fi signal weakens with distance and struggles to pass through walls, floors, and dense furniture. If the puck sits in a different room from the router, or behind a TV cabinet packed with cables and other electronics, the signal reaching it may simply be too weak to hold a stable connection.

Try the following:

  • Temporarily move the puck closer to the router to see whether it connects. If it does, you have found your problem — it is signal strength, not the puck.
  • Remove obvious obstructions. Metal surfaces, thick walls, and large mirrors are common culprits.
  • Keep the puck away from microwaves, cordless phones, and baby monitors, which can cause interference.

If distance is the issue, a Wi-Fi extender, a mesh node, or repositioning the router itself can make a permanent difference.

Step 4: Re-enter the Wi-Fi password carefully

A single mistyped character will stop a puck connecting, and it is easy to slip up with an on-screen keyboard and a remote. Wi-Fi passwords are case-sensitive, so an uppercase “O” and a lowercase “o”, or the number “0” and the letter “O”, are treated as completely different.

On the puck, go to the network settings, select your network again, and re-enter the password slowly and deliberately. Check it against the label on the underside of your router or the note you saved when the network was set up. If in doubt, use the “show password” option if one is offered, so you can see exactly what you have typed.

Step 5: Check you’re joining the right network and band

Many routers broadcast two Wi-Fi networks: a 2.4 GHz band and a 5 GHz band. Sometimes they share one name, and sometimes they appear as two separate networks (for example “MyWiFi” and “MyWiFi-5G”). Joining the wrong one, or a neighbour’s similarly named network, is a common cause of trouble.
