Why Your UK TV Picture Keeps Dropping to Low Quality (and How to Fix It)

You settle in for the football or a film, and the picture looks soft and blurry instead of sharp. A few minutes later it clears up, then drops again. What is actually happening when the picture drops

Rather than freeze and buffer with a spinning wheel, it steps down to a lower quality so the programme keeps playing. When your connection recovers, it steps back up.

The key word is sustained. A connection that hits 25 Mbps in a one-off speed test but sags to 8 Mbps whenever the neighbourhood gets busy will not hold 4K reliably. A stable connection of 25 Mbps or more gives consistent 4K; a stable 6 Mbps or so is enough for solid HD. The common causes of quality drops
When the picture keeps falling to a lower quality, the culprit is almost always one of these:

How to fix it, in order
Work through these steps in order. Most people find the problem within the first two or three.
1. Test your actual speed
Run a speed test on a device connected the same way your streaming setup is — same room, same Wi-Fi, ideally at the time the picture usually drops. Compare the result to the numbers above. If you are seeing well under 25 Mbps and you want 4K, that is your answer, and the following steps will help.
2. Reduce competing network use
Bandwidth is shared. If another device is running a big download or a video call, pause it and see if the picture recovers. Cloud backups and game-console updates are common hidden culprits because they run quietly in the background. Freeing up the line often restores HD or 4K within seconds, because adaptive streaming immediately notices the extra headroom.
3. Use Ethernet, or improve the Wi-Fi
Wi-Fi is the single most common weak link. A wired Ethernet connection between your router and the Sky Stream puck is the most reliable fix, because it removes interference and signal-strength problems entirely. If a cable is not practical, move the puck closer to the router, remove obstacles between them, or add a good-quality mesh or extender so the signal in the TV room is strong and steady.
4. Restart the router and the puck

5. Check whether it only happens at peak times
